Currently there is no cure for Trimethylaminuria, and treatment options are few. But there are choices out there for
those of you with Trimethylaminuria to help you live a normal life. A few changes to your everyday routine can make all the
difference in your self-esteem and overall view of life.
One thing that can be done is taking a few different foods out of your diet. The following foods should be avoided at
all costs.
- Fish
- Eggs
- Beans
- Any foods that contain Choline, Carnitine, Sulfur, or Nitrogen
All of these foods cause the body to build up trimethylamine. By avoiding these food groups, you can limit just how much
trimethylamine is produced.
Another precaution would be to use a slightly acidic detergent. Trimethylamine is an extremely basic compoud with a pH
of 9.8. By using an acidic detergent, around 5.5-6.5, you can help counteract it.
But, if none of these precautions seems to be working for you, you can seek counsel from your physician. Some physicians
will prescribe a low dose antibiotic to counteract the amount of bacteria in the gut. Less bacteria can sometime fight the
odor.
It must be noted that all of the precautions are meant to treat mild to moderate cases of Trimethylaminuria. Severe cases
should seek a physician's counsel.
